The history of Tallahassee is a fascinating one. The name of the city is taken from the Muskogean word for either “old fields” or “old towns.” Tallahassee as it stands in the present was shaped very keenly by the events of the Civil War. It was established as Florida’s capital during the 2nd legislative session, and it was also during this time period that Florida State University began its humble origins.
Tallahassee was slow to develop into a metropolitan powerhouse during the 20th century. At one point, there was even an attempted measure to have the capital status for Florida transferred to Orlando. This was measure was struck down, and Tallahassee continued its development into the place it stands as in the present.
In terms of things to see and do in Tallahassee, there is a great deal to enjoy. It’s also interesting to note that unlike much of Florida, Tallahassee experiences weather that could actually be described as legitimate seasons. The winters, for example, can be quite cold.
Museums in Tallahassee abound, owing to the fact that it is the state capital. You have the Old State Capital Museum, the Tallahassee Museum of History and Natural Science, the Tallahassee Automobile Museum, and the Museum of Florida History. Parks include Tallahassee Skate Park and Lake Ella. In particular, Lake Ella offers a beautiful outdoor area with a wide variety of activities.
For shopping needs, people love Governor’s Square Mall and Tallahassee Mall. For more unique shopping opportunities, Railroad Square is considered to be an absolute must. It’s just as popular with visitors as it is with longtime locals.
